Upstream is more interested to add xkb option for rupee sign instead of new keymap variant. But, this new keymap variant is going to be the default variant in India. New hardware keyboards will get the same new keymap variant added under India country. So, upstream added rupee sign as a xkb option as well as a new keyboard variant.

There are still many other characters that need to be added in various Indic fonts available in Fedora. As its not done yet and also pango is not updated to add new character class definitions, I see we need some time to add "Unicode 6 feature" (maybe by time F16 provided most important package pango will get updated).

Why would we have a new keyboard layout option for this? Why not make it the default for a particular layout?
Testing this should also include running gucharmap, and verifying that the character shows up correctly there.--mclasen 17:34, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
Was this character a Unicode 6 addition ? A more general Unicode 6 support' feature might be a more interesting - e.g I've just updated various GNOME components to Unicode 6...--mclasen 17:54, 26 January 2011 (UTC)
