Starting from version Fedora Core 6, the system's default font is '''Deja<code></code>Vu'''. Thanks to this change, the default installation of Fedora Core has a uniform look and feel for all latin-based, greek and cyrillic scripts.

'''Deja<code></code>Vu''' is a project that aims to provide a wider range of characters ([http://dejavu.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Current_status Current status] ) while maintaining the original look and feel of Bitstream Vera through the process of [http://dejavu.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Authors collaborative development] .
== Description ==

The Fedora Project is using the <code>DejaVu LGC</code> variation which includes support for latin-based languages, greek and cyrillic (LGC: Latin, Greek, Cyrillic) while the standard Deja<code></code>Vu font has currently support for even more scripts such as Arabic and Armenian. This was a technical decision for this version of Fedora Core, which might change in the future to add support for more languages.
The DejaVu fonts are a font family based on the ''Bitstream Vera'' fonts release 1.10. Its purpose is to provide a wider range of characters while maintaining the original look and feel through the process of collaborative development.

DejaVu is one of the most popular free and open-source derivatives of the Bitstream Vera font family.

Thanks to the release of Bitstream Vera with a free and open-source license in April 2003, it has been possible for font designers to innovate by increasing the language coverage to support more Latin-based languages, Cyrillic, Greek and other scripts. For a list of such innovative font projects based on Bitstream Vera, see the Bitstream Vera derivatives list .

The Fedora default font changed to DejaVu LGC at Fedora Core 6 release time. DejaVu LGC is a DejaVu derivative with only Latin, Greek and Cyrillic glyphs.

Starting from the Fedora 9 release, DejaVu replaces Dejavu LGC as default Fedora font. DejaVu LGC is now built as a DejaVu subpackage.
