Fedora Test Days
I18N

Date 2022-03-07 to 2022-03-13
Time all week

Website QA/Fedora_36_test_days
IRC #fedora-test-day (webirc)
Mailing list test

Can't make the date?
If you come to this page before or after the test day is completed, your testing is still valuable, and you can use the information on this page to test, file any bugs you find at Bugzilla, and add your results to the results section. If this page is more than a month old when you arrive here, please check the current schedule and see if a similar but more recent Test Day is planned or has already happened.
How to write Profile in test event page?
Please follow the nomenclature of adding profile information for your testing while submitting test result

1) which variant? WS (Workstation) or SB (Silverblue) or Kinoite ?

2) bare metal or VM?

3) which language used?

4) which arch used?

e.g. a complete user profile should be "Silverblue, KVM, ja_JP, x86_64"

What to test?[edit]

Today's installment of Fedora Test Day will focus on Internationalization a.k.a. i18n around Desktops including their applications. this aims to ensure if i18n support works enough on them.

Who's available[edit]

The following cast of characters will be available testing, workarounds, bug fixes, and general discussion ...

Prerequisite for Test Day[edit]

How to test?[edit]

Update your machine[edit]

If you test with an installed system, make sure you have all the current updates installed, using the update manager.

Live image[edit]

Instead of testing on an installed system, you may download a Fedora 36 nightly Workstation live image or Fedora 36 Silverblue image for your architecture. Tips on using a live image are available at FedoraLiveCD. The latest live image links can be found here: please make sure to get a Fedora 36 nightly, not Rawhide.

Run the tests[edit]

Visit the result page and click on the column title links to see the tests that need to be run: most column titles are links to a specific test case. Follow the instructions there, then enter your results by clicking the Enter result button for the test.

Reporting bugs[edit]

Include some instructions on how to report bugs, and any special instructions.

If you have problems with any of the tests, report a bug to Bugzilla for the appropriate component. If you are unsure about exactly how to file the report or what other information to include, just ask on IRC and we will help you.

Test Results[edit]

Please follow the nomenclature of adding profile information for your testing while submitting test result

1) which variant? WS (Workstation) or SB (Silverblue) or Kinoite ?

2) bare metal or VM?

3) which language used?

4) which arch used?

e.g. a complete user profile should be "Silverblue, KVM, ja_JP, x86_64"

Results will be transferred from result page

  1. RHBZ #2060751 I could not find any serious problems, only one minor nitpick that “hunspell -D” lists all dictionaries twice.
  2. I tested like this: for i in $(locale -a | grep utf8 | sed s/.utf8// | sed s/@.*$//); do fc-match sans:lang=${i}; done And there was **only** NotoSansMono-Regular.ttf in the output, no other fonts. Same for “serif” and “monospace” instead of “sans”.
  3. I was able to install the font package rit-rachana-fonts-1.3.1-1.fc36.noarch using “sudo dnf install langpacks-ml” (rit-meera-new-fonts-1.2.1-2.fc36.noarch was already installed before I did that although I installed Fedora 36 in Japanese locale) When both font packages were installed I could do this; [mfabian@fedora ~]$ LANG=ml_IN.UTF-8 fc-match sans-serif:lang=ml MeeraNew.otf: "Meera New" "Regular" [mfabian@fedora ~]$ LANG=ml_IN.UTF-8 fc-match serif:lang=ml RIT-Rachana-Regular.otf: "RIT Rachana" "Regular" [mfabian@fedora ~]$

  1. RHBZ #2061664 RHBZ #2060392 (Updated comment) IME works fine in GTK3 apps, but is very problematic and almost unusable in GTK4 and QT apps. In Wayland session: for gtk4-demo-application and QT apps (kwrite, etc.) the candidate panel shows up at wrong position, sometimes even covering the input cursor, for gnome-text-editor and gnome-control-center in addition to the candidate panel problem, on/off switch by Shift key does not work. In Xorg session (or Wayland with GTK_IM_MODULE=ibus and GDK_BACKEND=x11 for GTK4), for gtk4-demo-application and QT apps the candidate panel position is wrong, but at different position than on Wayland, for gnome-text-editor and gnome-control-center, the candidate panel does not show up at all. Bug reports: 2061664 for QT, 2060392 for GTK4
