Revision as of 18:43, 21 November 2008
The following table attempts to trace font package inclusion history in Fedora and its predecessors (Fedora Core, Fedora Extras, Fedora.us). Package availability is mostly listed at release time, except when the rolling nature of the repository (Fedora Extras, Fedora.us) made this check difficult.
Release | Packages added | Packages dropped | Main events |
---|---|---|---|

F10 |
fonts-script packages are removed. Their content has been migrated to other packages in previous releases, and the compatibility meta-packages are finally dropped. |
F9 |
Licensing audit causes some non-modifiable xorg fonts to be removed. The full version of DejaVu is now the distribution main font set. The Fonts SIG has its first effects. |
F8 |
In Fedora 8 fonts for all available languages are now installed by default on the desktop to give good default language coverage. Most of the fonts in generically named font packages have been moved to their own packages (Baekmuk, Lohit…) to reflect the upstream name and make font choices easier. The large and necessary F8 package churn thus does not correspond to the inclusion of many new fonts. |
F7 |
First Core+Extras merged release. | ||
FC6, FE6 |
DejaVu LGC is added to Fedora Core and made the default. The DejaVu (full) package in Fedora Extras is simplified to just take over if it's installed. Liberation is added to Fedora. |
FC5, FE5 |
Xorg is now modular. X font packages are renamed. Linux Libertine and FreeFont are merged. |
FC4, FE4 |
Doulos, Charis and Gentium are merged. The mass font package renaming continues. |
FC3, FE3 |
Fedora Extras is announced. Attempt to clean up and consolidate Fedora Core font package naming. Since the rules chosen are different from the community rules of Fedora Extras, more mass renaming will quickly follow. MgOpen is merged. |
FC2, Fus2 |
Bitstream Vera is merged as default font. XFree86 is replaced by Xorg, leading to mass X font package renaming (wouldn't be the last one). |
FC1, Fus1 |
Fedora rises from Red Hat Linux ashes. XFree86 is the only distribution font provider. The community packages its first font set, MathML fonts. |
