It should be mentioned that if using gnome-session-properties, session saving ("Remember running applications when logging out") should NOT be enabled. It makes the GUI unusable on the next login (see https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=647359 and https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=698184 ).
