Rules

This page contains community suggestions for the Fedora 11 release name. All submissions must meet the guidelines for release names.

Sulphur -> Cambridge -> <blank>? Cambridge is a <blank>, and so is <new name>.

The link between Sulphur and Cambridge was "both are cities." The link between Cambridge and the new name must be different than that link.

Naming Schedule

  • Name collection: Dec 2, 2008 - Dec 8, 2008
  • List to Fedora Board: Dec 9, 2008 - Dec 15, 2008
  • Board approved list to Legal: Dec 16, 2008 - Jan 4, 2009
  • Community vote on final name: Jan 5, 2009 - Jan 9, 2009
  • Name announced: Jan 10, 2009

Oxford is a university in England Nothing obvious at first search

Athens Cambridge is where the oldest American university is located, Athens where the oldest, public American university is located USPTO lists 97 trademark inclusions, all that are related to software or similar technology are cancelled or dead. Other considerations are Williamsburg (second oldest American) or Chapel Hill (debatable as the oldest public, American and also in NC near Red Hat HQ). I like Athens the most because it's short (2 syllables like most of the prior names), begins with "A" (the next generation of Fedora) and links to many things outside American influence (which should please our European colleagues).
Occidental Also a college Nothing found on Google
Sapienza It is the largest European university and the most ancient of the city of Rome. ("Sapienza" means "knowledge") Nothing obvious
Galápagos is a place central to Charles Darwins discovery of natural selection, so is Cambridge Nothing found on Google

Euryalus is the name of a British Royal Navy ship that (to add a bit more historical interest) served as flagship to admirals that served under Horatio Nelson at major actions. (Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood, who fought alongside Nelson at Trafalgar, transferred his flag from the Royal Sovereign to the Euryalus briefly after the Royal Sovereign was taken under tow and Admiral Sir Thomas Graves, who fought alongside Nelson at the Battle of Copenhagen, used the Cambridge as his flaghip during the Spanish armament) Google search +software, +computer, +Linux, +IT shows nothing obvious in top hits
Imperial Cambridge is a university, and so is Imperial (College, London).
Longfellow American educator and poet. Famous resident of Cambridge, MA

How to use this table

  1. Come up with a name idea. Put the name in the first column.
  2. Determine whether it passes the "is-a" test. You must be able to complete the sentence "Cambridge is a <...>, and so is <YOUR_NAME>." The link to the new name cannot be the same as the link from Cambridge to Sulphur. Mark the link in the appropriate column, such as "river in Kazakhstan," "deep-sea organism."
    • Don't choose obvious links, because they usually result in uninteresting names.
    • Don't choose very general names or unclear links.
    • Do choose obscure links to interesting things, which makes for a better name.
    • Do avoid all previous links wherever possible.
    • Do make sure there are at least a couple of ways to link out of the new name to the next name -- and they must be unique too!
  3. Use Google to search for possible trademark collisions. First search for the term itself along with "+software", and then broaden your search to include "+computer", "+hardware", "+technology", "+IT", and so on. Do not skimp on this step.
    • If you find a collision, it is best to find another name. Names that cause collisions will be eliminated by Red Hat's Legal department and thus waste their time, which is a valuable commodity for Fedora. Help us maximize their effectiveness by weeding out names that are trademarks of other entities, especially those in the IT industry.
    • If the collision is outside the IT/computing market, you can still submit the name but you should note the collision in the "Tested" column, and include a link to the site where the collision was found.
    • If you find no collisions, make that notation in the "Tested" column.
  4. Do not mark the approval columns. These are reserved for the approval authorities such as the Board and Red Hat Legal.
