Questions
Why do you want to work with the Fedora Project?
Do you have any past involvement with the Fedora Project or another open-source project as a contributor?
Within the Fedora Project
I have been contributing to the Fedora Project for more than six years so far. At the age of fourteen I first became a Fedora Ambassador and also a localization (l10n) contributor shortly afterwards.
I have been representing the Fedora community at several important events and conferences, both domestically and abroad. My recent focus includes community building efforts around EMEA and especially in the Balkans region.
I have been leading the bi-weekly EMEA Ambassadors IRC meetings for more than a year. Back in December 2015, I was elected by the community as part of FAmSCo. Currently I'm acting as the FAmSCo chair.
There has been a very recent interview of me published on the Fedora Magazine, which includes references to my contributions.
Outside the Fedora Project
I have been involved with Mozilla for the last two and a half years. I'm currently one of the Mozilla Reps, promoting the organization's vision for an open web. Lately, I've also become on of the Participation Leaders.
From time to time I've made contributions to several other free & open source projects, including (but not limited to) Apertium, GNOME, Haiku, KDE, LimeSurvey, MoinMoin, OpenIntents, openSUSE, Tux4Kids, Wikipedia and others.
Have you participated in GSoC in the past? If so, what year(s) and which organization(s)?
No, N/A.
Do you plan to continue contributing to the Fedora Project after GSoC? If yes, what sub-project(s) are you interested with?
Haha, definitely. I intend to resume my regular contributions and I'm also up for bigger challenges.
Why should we choose you over other applicants?
Below are a few things to consider:
- Experienced, long-time Fedora contributor.
- Well-connected to the entire Fedora community.
- Have an in-depth knowledge of Free & Open Source Software.
- Have work experience as a freelance front-end web developer.
- Hard working person, with an eye for detail.
Have you contributed to any other open source organizations or projects? If so, do you have artifacts you can show so we can see your skill set(s)?
As I mentioned earlier, I have occasionally made contributions to large projects. These had to do mainly with marketing, outreach and localization, not with code.
However, I have contributed with code to smaller open source projects and communities. You may have a look at some of my public GitHub commits.
Certainly. I would consider myself a free & open source software advocate, being a proud supporter of both movements.
As already mentioned, I have been regularly contributing to the Fedora Project and Mozilla. These contributions have mainly to do with marketing and outreach.
Within my university campus I'm leading a local free & open source software community, called fossaegean. I frequently organize and also deliver presentations related to various open source projects.
Proposal Description
Overview and The Need
At the Fedora Project, we have never actually been able to track the Ambassadors activities. It's really hard to have a clear overview of what's happening around every country. This is really painful, especially when we wish to further empower these communities and help them grow.
Even worse, we do not have a central place to report all Fedora-related events that are taking place. There is a wiki page for that, but it's constantly out-dated, hard to maintain and very few people are using it. Fedocal on the other hand does not serve this purpose either. We have also been unable to collect metrics for statistical reasons.
What I propose to implement is a web platform, a tool for all ambassadors and contributors to use. It will let people a) list their Fedora related events and b) report back on their activities.
How does it work (briefly)?
- User logs into the system.
- User creates a new event page, filling in all relevant details (event name, date, time, location, etc).
- User proposes potential metrics for his/her event. For example, these could include:
- # of participants.
- # of recruited contributors.
- For specific events, there will be more specific metrics. For example, for a localization event we would have: # of translated strings.
- After the event, the user will report back with the actual outcome.
Events will be listed to the public. Metrics can be used for statistics.
The platform should be integrated with fedmsg.
Note: This is an initial description and I will be more than happy to discuss these plans with fellow Fedora contributors and settle on details.
Any relevant experience you have
- Extensive experience in open web technologies, including HTML5/CSS3. Also in front-end frameworks, including Bootstrap, Zurb Foundation and Semantic UI.
- Familiar with Less, Sass.
- Intermediate knowledge of JavaScript.
- Basic knowledge of Ruby and Python.
- Experience in static site generators, including Jekyll.
- Comfortable with version control systems, including Git and Subversion.
How do you intend to implement your proposal
Will design and develop this web platform from scratch. I'm not into reinventing the wheel, so I'm going to use several open source tools and frameworks to make my life easier.
Please see below for the rough timeline I'm proposing.
A rough timeline for your progress
- 23/April/2016 - 22/May/2016:
- Reach out to the Fedora Leadership and later to the Fedora Ambassadors, present them with a basic outline of the project and request for early feedback.
- Perform early requirements analysis.
- 23/May/2016 - 27/June/2016:
- Another round of engaging with the Fedora Leadership and the Ambassadors, settling on details.
- Design mock-ups.
- Design the front-end.
- 28/June/2016 - 15/Aug/2016:
- Back-end development, integration with the front-end.
- Integration with fedmsg
- 16/Aug/2016 - 23/Aug/2016:
- Final Testing/bug fixing/code polishing.
- Write project report.
Dates of absence
- 11/May/2016 - 13/May/2016: DORS/CLUC 2016 Conference. Will be representing the Fedora Project.
- 14/May/2016 - 16/May/2016: OSCAL 2016 Conference. Will be representing the Fedora Project.
- 02/Aug/2016 - 05/Aug/2016: Flock 2016 Conference. Will be attending (at minimum).
I will still be available to work remotely during the above dates.
Final deliverable
A web platform, initially based on what I proposed above and on the details that I will later figure out with my mentors and my fellow Fedora contributors.
Any other details you feel we should consider
None I can think of at the moment. :)
