Prague

Prague is the capital and largest city of the Czech Republic. It is the fourteenth-largest city in the European Union. It is also the historical capital of Bohemia proper. Situated in the north-west of the country on the Vltava River, the city is home to about 1.3 million people, while its larger urban zone is estimated to have a population of nearly 2 million. The city has a temperate oceanic climate, with warm summers and chilly winters.

Prague is home to a number of famous cultural attractions, many of which survived the violence and destruction of 20th-century Europe. Main attractions include the Prague Castle, the Charles Bridge, Old Town Square, the Jewish Quarter, and Petřín hill. Since 1992, the extensive historic centre of Prague has been included in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites.

Transportation

  • Václav Havel Airport Prague (PRG) offers direct flights to/from 110 destinations in 42 countries including most of the European capital cities and numerous destinations in Asia. Direct flight from/to New York is available, other American locations are available trough Frankfurt, Amsterdam or other bigger European airports.
Airport Price for return tickets Duration
RDU 1000€ 20h
BOS 1600€ 11h
EWR* 700€ 10 h
PRG 0€ 0h
CDG 150€ 1.5h

EWR is cheaper than JFK and should be acceptable.

Note that the prices and durations are not very informative. Today prices for summer are not real to get (flights are not yet scheduled) and today prices for 1-2 months ahead do not reflect summer prices, but rather Christmas prices.

  • The Prague's Public Transport bus goes directly form the airport to the venue, 23 minutes, 32 CZK ~ 1.28 €
  • Public transport in Prague is very clean, reliable and cheap.
  • Taxi is usually less than 0.80 €/km
  • Prague also offers good train connections from central Europe.
  • Train ticket from Brno is only 150 CZK ~ 6 € when bought online.

Proposed Venue

  • Czech Technical University in Prague - Faculty of Information Technology - Thákurova 9, Praha
  • Very nice and relatively new building shared with Faculty of Arts
  • The venue holds local Linux event called LinuxDays (~500 ppl) - see some pics
  • We would have those rooms available:

    • 4 classrooms for 24 (with computers*)
    • 1 classroom for 24 where we can possibly install Fedora on computers*
    • 1 classroom for 48 (with computers*)
    • 3D printing lab with several RepRap printers available for workshops and/or hacking
    • student respirium with couches
    • compuetrs might work or might not during summer (due to maintenance)
  • Everything is located in one building
  • Free WiFi only for us + Eduroam + Faculty of Arts students' WiFi with known password
  • IPv6 working
  • 10 minutes public transport to city center, 20 minutes walk to Prague Castle
  • Price would be cca 80k CZK ~ 3200 € - this includes facilities, such as taking care for trash, toilet paper, cleaning floors, etc. for four days

Lodging

These are proposed hotel and hostels. All except Hotel Diplomat are run by the University and you might think about them as hostels. Masarykova kolej is somewhere between being a hotel and a hostel.

Food

The usual university cafeterias are closed during the summer, so we cannot use them. They are not very good anyway.

There are lots of places to go eat in 15 to 30 minutes walk distance, but there is no way we can provide some money-card thing like on Flock 2013.

Social Event

The Pub

The Pub is a very good beer restaurant located near the venue - it's only 15 minutes walk. They offer 130 places to sit and some more on the bar. Each table contains a tap, so everyone can pour their own beer. Statistics are available for each table, and tables can compete not only with each other, but also with those from other "The Pub" restaurants all around the Czech Republic and even some other countries including Germany. They have Pilsner Urquell beer, and offer dinner at fair prices. They are open until midnight during the week, on Friday and Saturday till 02:00, but they might be willing to stay open longer provided we fill the entire pub.

U Fleků

U Fleků is a world-known brewery and restaurant in the city center. They have more than a thousand places to sit and also a beer garden. Great food, their own beer. Closes at 23:00.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • almost free beer
  • everything (food, accommodation, transport...) should be cheaper than in western countries
  • lots of hostels near the venue
  • venue is relatively close to the airport
  • Brno Red Hat office is close
  • good experience with the venue (LinuxDays)
  • 3D printing lab
  • Prague is very attractive from the tourist side of view
  • local hackerspace http://brmlab.cz/ in the city

Cons

  • not all Czech people speak English
  • the only direct flight to North America is to New York, no direct flights to South America
  • everyone will probably need to buy their own lunch (unless we figure it out somehow)
