About Me
Roland Shield
I am nearly old, but hardly done. I am a GIS guy, working in the natural resources realm for state government (California). As such, I am anxious to see our government embrace the Open Source framework, particularly as it applies to GIS. Meanwhile, I am also trying to catch up with Linux as fast as I can. I have a B.S. in Geography (Carto/RS/GIS) and I am a budding web guy as well. I am a fan of Red Hat and Fedora, LibreOffice, and OpenGeo and, well, okay, a fan of Open Source, in general.
Contributions
I hope to get some buzz and traction going with these powerful tools in State Government. And failing that, I want to at least help to leverage them more effectively for some of the commuity organizations I am involved in (local church, youth clubs, etc.) So far, the State of California has "been a tough nut to crack" as one of the OpenGeo principals remarked to me the other day. Their(our) entire WAN/LAN/E-mail/WEB/Desktop model is MS to-to-bottom. As a concerned citizen, I see this itself as a sad state of affairs (pardon the pun) and I hope to get rumblings going on the inside as well as from without. Wish me luck !
