Description

This test case tests whether GNOME 3 startup is successful with the radeon driver.

Setup

  1. Use a GNOME 3-based live image, or an installed system with the GNOME 3 desktop available
  2. Ensure the nomodeset and radeon.modeset=0 kernel parameters are not set in your bootloader configuration
    • You can see your current kernel options by running cat /proc/cmdline
  3. Ensure the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf does not exist, or is a valid file that uses the radeon driver
  4. Shut your system down entirely, then start it up again
  5. If using a live image to test, ignore the above steps and simply boot the system from the live image with default options

How to test

  1. Attempt to log in to the GNOME 3 desktop
  2. Wait for the log in process and observe the result

Expected Results

  1. If the system hardware/driver combination is capable of supporting GNOME Shell, then GNOME Shell should be started
  2. If the system hardware/driver combination is not capable of supporting GNOME Shell, then GNOME's fallback mode - using GNOME Panel and Nautilus to display the desktop - should be started
  3. The system should never fail to display a desktop at all, or get stuck in a loop attempting to start either mode and failing
