Vedran Miletić

My name is Vedran Miletić and I am big fan of Fedora and free and open source software in general. I live in Rijeka, Croatia; Croatia is a beautiful country between Central and Southeast Europe, and Rijeka is a town situated in northwest of the country by the sea coast.

Professional work

I hold a diploma in Mathematics and a PhD in Computer Science. Previously, I was working as a teaching assistant in Department of Informatics at the University of Rijeka. Among others, I was teaching practicals in Operating Systems, Distributed Systems, Computer Networks, and Network Management, relying on Linux and a diverse set of free software in the process. (If you can read Croatian, the course materials might be interesting.) My research was focused on the correlated failures in the optical telecommunication networks and also relied on Linux and open source software.

Right now, I am working in the area of computational (bio)chemistry.

Open source work and activism

I have contributed to a number of open source software projects, including ns-3, LLVM, Mesa, GROMACS, CP2K, and LaTeX Beamer class.

I have been messing with Red Hat and Fedora for quite a long time, and using Fedora as my primary OS since Fedora Core 3. Aside from Fedora, I also use Debian, because, like Fedora, it puts freedom above everything else. I love free software movement and it delights me to see how much it has grown, and I try to get my students intersted in contributing to it. We will see how it goes in the coming months.

Other than that, I have been distributing Linux on CDs and DVDs to anyone who asked about it since 2004. For a while, I was a member of local LUG called RiLinux (short for Rijeka Linux), but unfortunately it was shut down in 2007. In 2009. a similar organization was resurrected under a different name, HULK-Ri.

At the Deprtment where I work, we have an Open Class every so often. During these classes, we listen to seminars held by members of HULK-Ri on various topics in free software.

On a non-regular basis I write about free software, digital freedoms, science and open source scientific software, open standards, academia, and intellectual property at my blog Nudged Elastic Band is my band name.
