Crimson Text font

Description

Crimson Text is a font family for book production in the tradition of beautiful oldstyle typefaces.

There are a lot of great free fonts around, but one kind is missing: those Garamond-inspired types with all the little niceties like oldstyle figures, small caps, fleurons, math characters and the like.

Crimson Text is inspired by the fantastic work of people like Jan Tschichold, Robert Slimbach and Jonathan Hoefler. We hope that with your help, Crimson Text will one day grow into a typographic workhorse for everyone.

Additional information

  • From upstream, "Crimson Text is under heavy development, and the spacing/kerning is abysmal. If you use it in public these days, you'll likely embarass yourself." We'll probably need to update from upstream as the project progresses.
  • Upstream roadmap:
    • Polytonic Greek
    • Cyrillic
    • Vietnamese
    • IPA
    • Whatever other script you can help out with :)
    • a Crimson Math font, with MATH table and XeTeX/unicode-math support, including optically scaled glyphs for equations
    • lots of symbols;
    • a "Crimson Titling" optical weight with engraved caps;
    • more ornaments.
