Detailed Description
Swfdec is a decoder/renderer for Macromedia Flash animations, and currently it handles most Flash 3, 4 and many Flash 7 and 8 videos. It consists of three packages: swfdec, swfdec-gnome, and swfdec-mozilla, which have been added to Fedora Rawhide. Whether swfdec-mozilla is installed by default will be voted on by FESCo before beta release based on testing and desktop team feedback.
Benefit to Fedora
Fedora will have a free implementation of Flash.
Scope
All swfdec packages have been packaged, reviewed, and appear in rawhide. Here's a message from upstream giving a good description of the strengths and weakness of swfdec: https://www.redhat.com/archives/fedora-desktop-list/2008-January/msg00084.html
swfdec and swfdec-mozilla now have GStreamer missing-plugins support .
Test Plan
- Test flash sites that are known to be supported out-of-the-box. http://swfdec.freedesktop.org/wiki/ScreenShots
User Experience
"Hey, Flash works"
Dependencies
- Gstreamer & Pulse Audio
Contingency Plan
Don't install swfdec-mozilla by default.
Documentation
None.
Release Notes
Add a note that swfdec-mozilla is installed by default, and to play back the flash videos (YouTube, etc.) however, you will need codecs that are not available in the Fedora repositories.
