About Me
I am a lover of Linux, computer and all things tech. I started using Linux around 11 years ago on a Fedora Core 1 machine, since then there was no turning back. My weekends are usually spend tinkering around with Linux (there is always something that needs working upon :D ) and using the shell. I started automating my tasks using bash scripts, but then found Python. I have a lot to learn, and hopefully that process is never going to stop. I am so excited to be part of this program and hope I can continue contribute to Fedora even if I am not chosen for GSoC. Some of my code can be found in http://github.com/karuvally
I have never done any major contributions to Fedora or any other Linux distribution for that matter. But I do love to tinker with Linux, find solutions and automate tasks whenever possible. I never find it hard to concentrate while working with Linux, since this is what I do for fun. My idea of a day well spent is learning something new about Linux and spending some quality time on the terminal ;) But when things do get serious, I prioritize the stuff I have to do often using a plain text to-do list and the vim editor. When under stress, I try to contemplate for a few minutes. This has proven to be a great technique for calming the mind and concentrating on the work at hand.
Why I Want to Work with Fedora Project?
Fedora Core 1 was my first distribution. I owe it you guys for bringing me into the Linux world. And most importantly, the Fedora community continues to contribute greatly to the Free Software movement and Linux not just by fixing the broken stuff, but by adding new Applications and feature that often get standardized within a couple of years. Moreover, all the work done on the Fedora Project moves upstream and everyone gets benefited. That is what Linux and free software is all about. Last, but not the least, you have one of the most friendliest communities of any free software project. I believe that I should not end up being and end user but give something back to the community. And Fedora is the best place to start.
Why I want to Work on migrating Plinth to Fedora Server?
The Freedombox project is a free software project based on Debian aiming to deliver a private cloud server suite, which can replace a number of commercial web services. Porting Plinth to Fedora is very important as the rest of the components used by Freedombox project are independently developed free software already available on Fedora. Personally, this project seems very interesting to me, as it is similar to what I do everyday on my computer, namely trouble shooting. If there was nothing to fix, the Linux environment would have been a very boring place. With this project I can spend enough time inside shell, work with my beloved Raspberry Pi and hopefully fiddle with some of the python code written for Plinth.
Project Schedule
I plan to learn in detail about the Freedombox project and Plinth during the community bonding period. I will install it on Debian Testing, download the source try to have a general understanding of the project.
Then I will fiddle with the underpinnings of Plinth so as to remove the hardcoded APT bindings.
RPM packages will be created and tested. Once done, a repository will be created for Plinth.
In the final phase, the application will be tested extensively on Raspberry Pi.
Personal plans from May to September
My exams end at the end of May, and I will be having Vacation till August 1st week. I have no tours planned during this time and hope to work extensively on this project. From first week of August, I will still be able to put at least 4 hours of work into the project as I live in hostel near to my college.
