Red Hat High
Mission
To provide students with know-how and inspiration: the know-how to get the most out of technology using open source principles, and the inspiration to teach their peers.
Background
In summer of 2006, Red Hat held its first Red Hat High residential camp. More than 50 middle-school aged kids from around North Carolina came to learn about technology and collaboration. There were four curriculum tracks: web design, audio production, video production, and 3D animation, and each kid worked exclusively in one of the tracks for five days, three hours a day. The volunteer instructors gave them a little bit of hands-on experience with their tools, and then let them go. At the end of the week, the kids shared their productions with one another.
More than anything, it was a learning experience: for the kids, for the volunteers, and for Red Hat. Now the challenge: how do we do it again, but next time, bigger?
