Introduction
This page describes the process followed by the Marketing team to make a Release slogan for a Fedora release. If you have suggestions on how to improve these instructions, please edit the page!
Steps
Create the release slogan page
Create a new wiki page for the slogan of the current release called F42 release slogan.
- Edit the page, and add only this line:
{{subst:Slogan}}
- Save the page.
- Edit the page again, read the comments found inside the <!-- --> marks, and follow their instructions.
- Save the page again.
Create redirects to the F42 release slogan page from commonly mistyped pages and variants on capitalization, such as:
- F42 Release Slogan
- F42 release Slogan
- Fedora 42 Release Slogan
- Fedora42 Release Slogan
- Fedora 42 release slogan
Prepopulate the release slogan page
Get a few people to help you contribute some starter sample ideas to the release slogans page to give people inspiration for getting started. The ideas don't have to be great - they just need to exist. This should only take a few minutes, and is easily done by popping on IRC (perhaps in #fedora-mktg) and asking those who are around if they have any ideas.
Announce a call for release slogan ideas
When you feel the page is ready, announce it to the Fedora community and solicit feedback. We suggest the following publication outlets.
- Planet Fedora
- marketing list
- devel-announce list
- Fedora Insight
- microblogging/status updates on the @fedora feeds
Remember to set the "reply-to" or "follow up" address to the marketing list.
Email Template
We need a slogan for the F42 release. A release slogan is a short call-to-action that fits the artwork theme from Design, found at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/F42_release_slogan#Themes. (F41's slogan was ".")
If you are interested in suggesting ideas for the release slogan, please take a look at the Release Slogan SOP, and the criteria for selection, at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Release_slogan_SOP. The slogan must be:
- short (1-3 words)
- a call to action
- positive
It should reinforce that Fedora helps the user achieve something great. It should also reflect some of ideas and themes found in the release artwork, and, if possible, also touch upon the Four Foundations (https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Foundations).
Please put your slogan ideas here: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/F42_release_slogan#New_slogan_ideas
The deadline for submissions is {DAY} {DATE} {TIME_UTC}, which is our next Marketing meeting (https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Marketing_meetings). We'll be discussing submissions there, and then the FPL, Mo Duffy, and the Marketing team lead will take that input and select the final slogan on {DAY} {DATE}. Let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns -- and let the wiki table know if you have any ideas!
Choose a release slogan
The release slogan is chosen by the FPL in cooperation with the Marketing team lead and the Design team lead. Consideration is given to the criteria shown above. Localization issues should be acknowledged, but because slogans are inherently linked to language idioms, it may not be possible for the slogan to be equally effective in every language, and preference is given to the Fedora Project's lingua franca.
It may be necessary to choose a short list of acceptable slogans since not every slogan will pass legal review.
Send slogan(s) for legal review
The FPL sends one or more slogans to legal counsel for trademark clearance. Counsel tries to ensure that we aren't trespassing on another companies intellectual property, such as a trademarked slogan. They return one or more cleared slogans for use by the Marketing team. If no slogans are cleared, the Marketing team may need to solicit or provide more ideas and try again.
Announce the release slogan
By the time the slogan is chosen, or shortly thereafter, the person who submitted the slogan should write an explanation of how the slogan was derived, and what it means to the writer. This text will help inform the announcements that are then made to lists where the idea-gathering phase was announced. Another Marketing team individual can write this text if needed.
The slogan is announced with two separate announcements:
General announcement
This announcement goes to the following lists: marketing, devel-announce, ambassadors, and design-team.
Explain how the slogan is relevant to this release, the artwork, and Fedora in general.
Example slogan announcement from Fedora 13
Announcement for translators
This announcement goes to the trans-announce, ambassadors, and marketing lists.
Clarify for translators that if they have trouble translating the slogan, they can either choose something close in meaning, using the informational context above, or come to IRC or the mailing list for help in choosing something appropriate. Translators are not required to provide a literal translation if that would be problematic in their locale.

Coordinate with Websites team
Send an email to the websites list to notify the Websites team of the slogan. File a ticket in the fedora-web issue tracker to have the slogan added to the next release of the Fedora Project website.
