I'm not 100% sure I understand the terminology - is "service processor" a separate CPU not under direct control of the OS that is specialized for management functions? --Mitr 11:51, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
Service Processor is a separate CPU not under the control of the OS. It is active even if the server is shutdown (but is still plugged into wall power). It communicates with the various hardware components on the system without the intervention of the OS. -- Charles Rose 17:15, 02 Aug 2012 (IST)
The feature is named "agent-free", but in fact the detailed description describes one or more agents running within the OS (syslog forwarding, SNMP forwarding, ...). Or am I misunderstanding this? --Mitr 11:51, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
Mitr, you are right that there are agents we need in the OS. By agent-free, we mean there is no need for a 3rd party software to be installed on the system to get the functionality that we are proposing. Currently, we need 3rd party software to provide these functionality. We are open to calling this any other name if this sounds misleading. -- Charles Rose 17:15, 02 Aug 2012 (IST)
The release notes don't tell much - "improved support for Dell trademark_here server management" would be more informative. Telling users where to look or what is new (or linking somewhere) would be much more useful. --Mitr 11:51, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
We are putting together a wiki on www.dell.com to contain more details on the usage. I will update this shortly after that is done -- Charles Rose 17:15, 02 Aug 2012 (IST)
The "Scope" description of "Fedora’s start-up scripts and default configuration files of certain services" is rather vague - what are we approving? Will anything change for non-Dell systems? (Will there be additional daemons, and will they be started and/or running on non-Dell hardware?) To be explicit, approving the feature does not, by default, remove the need to get such changes accepted by maintainers of the individual packages. --Mitr 11:51, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
I have updated the scope to be more specific. Short answer, we do not intend to include any new daemons, but one start-up script and a config file. The scripts will run on any system with IPMI compliant hardware (most server hardware). Difference between various implementations of OEM hardware will be handled between IPMI commands and the script. We do not want the script to be Dell specific. -- Charles Rose 17:15, 02 Aug 2012 (IST)
