Does this affect CUPS printers (e.g. locally attached) in any way? E.g. will print status still be displayed for these? --Mitr 10:55, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
I'm thinking at the moment that local CUPS printers will be shown via printservices, yes. This means that when the GTK+ print backend is used, the cups backend should not be used. However, I'm open to ideas about that. --Twaugh 11:05, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
Will it be possible to use printservice from something else than the GTK print dialog? e.g.
- LibreOffice? In F17 it uses a different print dialog
- KDE?
- (Dare I ask...) the lp* commands, or perhaps even programs using libcups*?
More generally, what is the long-term plan? Coexistence of the two stacks for the foreseeable future? Some kind of compatibility layer? Migration of some/all users of cups? --Mitr 10:55, 27 July 2012 (UTC)
Good point. Yes, LibreOffice and KDE print dialogs will need to be adjusted as well, but I doubt that will happen in time for F18. The CUPS command line programs, and libcups, will not be changed. --Twaugh 11:05, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
I talked to dantti - the KDE printing guy - he's now aware of this feature but he's not going to implement it now. As the Feature was postponed to Fedora 19, we have time to work on it/cooperate with upstream. --Jreznik 8:21, 31 July 2012 (UTC)
Important notice: Feature has been postponed for Fedora 19 to be fully functional. It will be available as technological preview (TP) in Fedora 18 for interested parties. If maintainer wishes, he should take care about contacting release notes team to provide it in final release notes (as TP).
